Preeclampsia and High Blood Pressure in Pregnant Women

Childbirth is no picnic even for a woman who is in perfect health.

If the mother to be is suffering from high blood pressure medical alarm bells will begin ringing. That's when you might hear a doctor mention Preeclampsia....

In any person high blood pressure can be serious.

It can cause dangerous and adverse affects to most of the organs in the body if left untreated.

Sadly most of us don't keep a close watch on our blood pressure until its symptoms almost slap us in the face.

Oh sure, when you're moving along with your busy life feeling good you just don't consider that your blood pressure may be about to become a problem. That's understandable.

Even if you've never been told you have high blood pressure, it's always a good idea to have it checked at least once a year.

That's easy to say, but in fact there are all sorts of potential health issues that should prompt you to have a yearly check up.  And of course, most of us don't.

It's a little different with your blood pressure.

It's easy to check at home if you have an inexpensive measuring device.

Early detection of high blood pressure and its subsequent control is the key to preventing damage to your heart and kidneys.

Yes, the kidneys play an important part in the control of blood pressure regulation.

If you are a woman who is planning a pregnancy it is very important that you have your blood pressure checked.

Then you will have a good baseline to work with when you become pregnant and it will be easy to monitor any change in your pressure.

Blood pressure usually declines slightly in pregnancy; therefore any rise will be a cause for concern.

Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby.

Affecting at least 5-8% of all pregnancies, it is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine.

Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms; however, some women with rapidly the advancing disease report few symptoms.

It demands immediate medical attention.  If it is not immediately treated it can cause seizures and even ultimately lead to death.

Women who have a history of high blood pressure, which could ultimately lead to Preeclampsia, high Blood Pressure and Anxiety include

- Women suffering with high blood pressure before they became pregnant
- Overweight or obese women
- Women who become pregnant over the age of 40
- Women who have a previous history of diabetes, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or
  Lupus
- Women who have experienced high blood pressure or Preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy

Watch out for Preeclampsia.  High blood pressure is a signal that a pregnant woman needs medical attention, so that it can be controlled and not lead to other serious health risks.  Monitor your blood pressure weekly and if it begins to climb... get thee to a doctor!
