Low Blood Pressure!

Abnormal Blood Pressure Can Have Serious Consequences!

What really is low blood pressure?  Is there anyone who will take a chance on answering that question?

How about this: "Low blood pressure is a condition where a person's blood pressure is much lower than usual."

See, wasn't that easy?

Low blood pressure symptoms are often dizziness, lightheadedness or even outright collapse.

When you have low blood pressure it means there is not enough blood flowing to your heart, brain, and other vital organs of the body.  It's easy to guess such a situration is not good for your health.

Here's the surprise.  It's very difficult to determine what is a person's "normal" blood pressure, because something that is normal for one person may well be "abnormal" for another.  Blood pressure that is to high or to low can be the cause of serious health problems.

It's improtant to investigate even small changes in blood pressure, and to do it immediately upon the first clue of an abnormal situration.  What may seem to be a minor blood pressure problem can quickly cascade into a number of life threatening health problems.

Low Blood Pressure by the Book

A classic, text book blood pressure reading is normally about 120/80 mmHg.  mmHg is a symbol for millimetre of mercury.  In the old blood pressure measuring device there was a glass tube that contained a column of mercury.

When measured, your blood pressure would move the mercury up and down within the tube and that's where the mmHg measurement comes from.  That standard is even used in today's modern electronic measuring devices.

For some people, low blood pressure can leave you feeling light headed, sluggish or headachy. Yet other people can walk around with a blood pressure so low they should be flat on their backs.

These folks just don't experience any symptoms whatsoever. They may only discover they have a low blood pressure when they make a rare visit to a doctor or health professional.

Don't procrastinate.  Should you occasionally lose consciousness when you stand, or if you feel repeatedly weak, light headed or constantly tired - walk, don't run, to your doctor or even the emergency room of your hospital.   Yes, your condition may be that dangerous!

Low blood pressure can be a sign chronic fatigue syndrome in younger people. In older people it can be an indication of a more serious problem such as heart disease.

Women in their 40's or younger, can find their blood pressure may drop below 90/60 mmHg during pregnancy, crash dieting or even during the hot weather. So it's important that if you know you are prone to low blood pressure that you have regular medical check ups.

If you are taking high blood pressure medication, that medication can sometimes cause your blood pressure to drop rapidly, which causes the same type of problems discussed above.

Anyone taking that type of medication should choose the time of day they take their medication very carefully to ensure the effects are kept to a minimum.

What have we learned here?  Abnormal blood pressure is serious.  At the first sign of high or low blood pressure make a bee line to your nearest medical center.
